According to reports in Tribune Online and Vanguard News, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the reported abduction of about 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members traveling to their orientation camp. The incident, according to the reports, occurred on an unspecified date and location. The victims are yet to be rescued at the time of this report. According to Tribune Online’s report, Obi described the incident as another troubling sign of worsening insecurity in Nigeria. In a statement posted on his Facebook page, he said the victims were reportedly abducted while en route to the orientation camp. The former Anambra State governor also expressed concern over the recurring cases of kidnapping, which he said had placed families under constant fear. He stressed that the protection of lives and property remained the government’s primary responsibility.
In a related development, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has also condemned the abduction and demanded urgent rescue of the prospective corps members. The university, in a statement, expressed shock over the incident and called for immediate action to ensure the safe release of the victims.
It’s unclear if the abduction of these prospective corps members is linked to any larger issue or trend of insecurity affecting Nigeria at present. However, the incidents highlight the ongoing concern about safety and security across the country.
