Mounting Pressure on Nigeria: Femicide Convention Ratification Urged by NHRC and AU Rights Envoy

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the African Union's Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security are urging Nigeria to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the African Union’s Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security, Mrs. Bineta Diop, are mounting pressure on Nigeria to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). According to reports by THISDAYLIVE, this call comes as part of a 15-country push aimed at bringing the treaty into force. The urgency is heightened in light of the high incidence of femicide in Nigeria, a concern shared by both the NHRC and Mrs. Diop. The AU Special Envoy emphasized the need for Nigeria to reserve parliamentary seats for women ahead of the 2027 elections to ensure gender parity in political representation. This move is expected to help tackle the root causes of gender-based violence and promote women’s rights. The NHRC and Mrs. Diop’s efforts underscore the international community’s growing concern over the safety and rights of women in Nigeria. The ratification of CEDAW would not only signal Nigeria’s commitment to ending gender discrimination but also provide a legal framework for addressing the systemic issues that fuel femicide. As the debate on gender equality and women’s rights continues to gain momentum, it is crucial for Nigerian leaders to heed these calls for action.
