UI’s New Vice-Chancellor Assumes Office, Pledges Purposeful Leadership

Professor Peter Olapegba, the 14th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, has officially taken office. He pledged a transformative agenda and purposeful leadership.

The University of Ibadan (UI) has a new Vice-Chancellor. Prof Peter Olapegba, who was appointed earlier this year, assumed office on November 3, 2026. Speaking to journalists, he pledged a transformative agenda and purposeful leadership. According to Punch Newspapers, Prof Olapegba stated that his tenure would focus on addressing critical issues facing the institution, including infrastructure, research, and student welfare.

The new Vice-Chancellor’s appointment follows a turbulent period for UI. The tenure of the previous Vice-Chancellor, Prof Idowu Olayinka, was marked by controversy, including allegations of financial mismanagement and academic misconduct. Prof Olapegba’s pledge to bring transparency and accountability to the university is, therefore, a welcome development for many.

The University of Ibadan, founded in 1948, is one of Nigeria’s premier institutions of higher learning. It has produced several distinguished alumni, including Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka and former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The university’s reputation and the expectations of its community will undoubtedly be high as it enters this new chapter under Prof Olapegba’s leadership.
