Lawmakers, security experts, policymakers, and other stakeholders will gather for the second annual Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture and Awards hosted by the House of Representatives Press Corps. Among those slated to speak is Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba, former militant leader Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), business tycoon Tony Elumelu, and Senate President Ahmad Lawan. The discussion will center around the proposed State Police bill, a controversial topic that has sparked debate within Nigeria’s political circles.
This event comes amidst growing calls for increased security in the country, particularly in light of escalating insecurity and banditry in various regions. The proposed legislation aims to address these concerns by providing state-level police forces with the autonomy to tackle local crime issues more effectively.
However, the bill has faced criticism from some quarters, who argue it could lead to a fragmented and inefficient security system. Opponents also contend that such a move would further entrench regional divisions within Nigeria.
The event is scheduled to take place on October 7th at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. Premium Times Nigeria will provide updates as they become available.
