Stock Market Sustains Losses Amid Declining Inflation

Despite a fourth consecutive month of decline in the headline inflation rate, the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) has continued to drop, according to Vanguard News. This development comes as a surprise to some investors, as they had expected the improving economic climate to boost the stock market. However, the ongoing selling pressure across sectors has resulted in losses for the market. The total value of equities listed on the Exchange, represented by the NGX market capitalisation, dropped to N260.725 trillion last Friday from N161.260 trillion the previous week. This downward trend is a departure from the positive trajectory that the market had been experiencing in recent months. It is unclear what factors are driving this sudden shift in investor sentiment, but it is worth noting that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has not said when the facility began operating that was designed to boost liquidity in the market. The impact of this selling pressure on the market will become clearer in the coming weeks, as investors await the release of further data on the economy’s performance. For now, investors are advised to exercise caution and to seek professional advice before making any investment decisions.
