On October 1st, a documentary about the life and struggles of Chief MKO Abiola, Nigeria’s acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, was premiered in Lagos. The event, held as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, attracted a host of dignitaries, including President Tinubu, former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs Senator Godswill Akpabio, and Egyptian actor Ahmed Abdul Rahman Abbas. According to Premium Times Nigeria, the premiere was also attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his wife Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.
The documentary, titled ‘June 12: The Unseen Battle’, promises to delve into the untold story of Abiola’s struggle for democracy in Nigeria. The post-screening panel discussion featured a lineup of notable personalities, including Abiola’s wife Kudirat Abiola, his daughter Hafsat Abiola-Costello, and Chief Afe Babalola, among others.
The premiere marks an important step in celebrating the life and legacy of Chief MKO Abiola, who died on July 7, 1998, following years of detention by the military regime that annulled his election victory. The documentary is expected to shed light on the untold story of his struggle for democracy and human rights in Nigeria.
