Unchecked Diabetes: 75% of Cases in Africa Remain Untreated

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised an alarm over the increasing number of undiagnosed diabetes cases in Africa, with an estimated 75% of cases remaining undetected. According to the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Mohamed Janabi, this development poses a significant risk to the affected individuals as it increases their chances of suffering life-threatening complications. The WHO’s warning comes as a report by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) indicated that an estimated 24.6 million adults aged 20 to 79 were living with diabetes in the African Region in 2024.

Premium Times Nigeria reported that the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Mohamed Janabi, made this disclosure during a press briefing in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The WHO has been working to increase awareness about diabetes and improve access to healthcare services in the region, but the pace of progress is not keeping up with the rising number of cases.

The WHO’s warning is a call to action for governments, healthcare providers, and individuals across Africa to take urgent steps to address the growing diabetes crisis. Early detection and treatment of diabetes can prevent complications and improve quality of life for those affected. It is essential to invest in diabetes education, screening, and treatment to reduce the burden of the disease in Africa.
