The All Progressives Congress (APC) Party Campaign Council (PCC) spokesperson has defended the proposed ₦10bn Aso Villa solar project, arguing it will contribute significantly to alleviating the nation’s power challenges. In a statement to Punch Newspapers, the spokesperson, who remained unnamed, emphasized that the project would reduce Nigeria’s reliance on the national grid, thereby freeing up electricity for citizens. The APC PCC spokesperson pointed out that the solar project, planned for the presidential villa, will generate at least 10MW of power, which could be diverted to the national grid when excess. This development comes amidst growing public discontent over the inadequate power supply across the country. According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the country’s power generation capacity stood at around 12,500MW as of July 2021, but actual supply was averaging just 4,000MW due to infrastructure limitations and distribution losses. The Aso Villa solar project, if implemented, could represent a step forward in addressing these challenges. However, details about when the project will commence or its anticipated completion date remain unclear.
