Unregulated Mining: Preventable Tragedies in Niger and Taraba

The mining sector in Nigeria has come under scrutiny following a series of tragic incidents in Niger and Taraba states. According to Punch Newspapers, these accidents are a result of the country’s failure to regulate the industry effectively.

In the past few months, mines in both states have collapsed, causing multiple fatalities and leaving families devastated. The economic losses from these preventable tragedies are substantial, with reports suggesting that billions of naira worth of investments have been lost due to poor safety measures and lack of oversight.

Nigeria’s mining sector is crucial to the country’s economy, providing employment opportunities and contributing significantly to the national GDP. However, without proper regulations in place, the industry remains a danger zone for workers and investors alike.

The Nigerian Mining Corporation (NMC) has not commented on the recent accidents or when they began operating in these affected areas. The government has been urged to take immediate action to ensure safety measures are implemented across all mining sites to prevent further loss of life and economic damage.
