Professor Pat Utomi: Corruption Costing Nigerians Lives

In a stark warning, Professor Pat Utomi, a renowned political economist, has stated that corruption is costing Nigerians their lives by diverting public funds away from essential services. According to a report by Punch Newspapers, Utomi made these remarks during a public lecture at the University of Lagos.

‘Corruption is a clear and present danger to Nigeria,’ Utomi was quoted as saying. ‘It diverts funds meant for essential services, including healthcare and education, and ultimately costs lives.’

This is not the first time Utomi has sounded the alarm on corruption in Nigeria. In recent years, he has been a vocal critic of the country’s political elite, accusing them of prioritizing personal gain over the welfare of the citizens.

Utomi’s warning comes as Nigeria grapples with a host of social and economic challenges, including a struggling healthcare system and a high rate of maternal and child mortality. The World Health Organization has ranked Nigeria as having one of the worst healthcare systems in the world.

‘Corruption is a major contributing factor to these problems,’ Utomi said. ‘It undermines trust in government, discourages investment, and makes it difficult to implement effective policies.’

Utomi’s warning serves as a reminder that corruption remains a pressing issue in Nigeria, and that it has far-reaching consequences for the health and wellbeing of the country’s citizens.
