World Teachers’ Day, celebrated annually on October 5th, is an opportunity to acknowledge the vital role educators play in shaping future generations. This year, several Nigerian entities have reiterated their commitment to enhancing education infrastructure and supporting teachers.
According to Premium Times Nigeria, the Ogun State Government has announced the employment of 7,000 teachers and a pledge of N24 billion (approximately $56 million) for education infrastructure.
Voice of Nigeria reported that the Federal Government also pledged more investment in teachers during World Teachers’ Day celebrations.
In addition, several political figures have expressed their support for the teaching profession. For instance, Olooye Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke, an Oyo State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), celebrated teachers and commended their resilience.
However, challenges remain. The Labour Party has called for a national state of emergency in the teaching sector due to the pitiful condition of teachers in Nigeria.
In Gombe State, teachers have lamented poor welfare, inadequate salaries, and rising cost of living on World Teachers’ Day, urging the government to address these issues.
As the country strives towards improving education quality and accessibility, it is crucial that the plight of teachers is addressed, and investments are made to ensure a strong and sustainable future for Nigeria’s educational system.
