The International Criminal Court (ICC) has found itself at the center of criticism following the United States’ imposition of sanctions on the global court. This move comes after Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law. The sanctions, announced on Friday, bar all US-based companies from any work with the ICC. According to Premium Times Nigeria, allies have expressed concern over the US’ decision, which they believe could hinder the ICC’s ability to carry out its mandate. Pillay has served as a judge of the High Court of South Africa, the International Criminal Court, and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, among other roles. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised her as one of the ‘great defenders of international legal principles in our time.’ However, US President Donald Trump has criticized the award, calling it ‘disgraceful’ in a tweet on Friday. This is not the first time Trump has made such a claim, having repeatedly asserted that he had settled eight wars since resuming office.
