The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri, for 25 days from October 20, 2026, for runway repairs. This was disclosed in separate reports by the Tribune Online, Vanguard News, and Punch Newspapers. According to the reports, the decision follows an agreement between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodinma, and other regional stakeholders. The closure is expected to affect flight operations during the yuletide season. Passengers are advised to make alternative travel arrangements during this period. This move is aimed at ensuring the safety and efficiency of the airport’s operations. According to FAAN, the runway has shown signs of wear and tear, necessitating the need for immediate repairs. The closure will also provide an opportunity for the installation of new equipment and facilities to improve the airport’s capacity and service delivery. It is not clear when the airport will reopen, but passengers are urged to monitor FAAN’s official communication channels for updates.
