Nigeria Faces Lassa Fever Challenge as Death Toll Hits 268

According to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the country is currently grappling with a significant Lassa fever outbreak. As of October 12, 2026, the NCDC reported a total of 268 Lassa fever deaths, marking a fatality rate of 23.6%.

These figures highlight the continued burden of the disease despite a sharp decline in newly confirmed infections in the latest reporting week, as per the NCDC’s data. The outbreak, which has been ongoing since January, has affected 18 states in Nigeria.

Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic illness transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by rodents infected with the Lassa virus. The disease shares similar symptoms with other illnesses like malaria, making it challenging to diagnose accurately in some cases.

The Nigerian government and health organizations are working to contain the outbreak, implementing control measures such as contact tracing, infection prevention, and control, and case management. However, the high fatality rate underscores the need for continued vigilance and investment in public health infrastructure.
