Nigeria Launches Programme to Reduce Annual Wheat Imports by 7 Million Metrics Tons

The Nigerian government has launched a new initiative to significantly reduce the country’s reliance on imported wheat, according to multiple reports. The programme, yet to be officially named, is aimed at cutting annual wheat imports by 7 million metric tons, as stated by unnamed government sources speaking to Daily Trust. This move is part of a broader strategy to boost domestic agricultural production and achieve food security.

Nigeria currently imports approximately 8 million metric tons of wheat annually, making it the world’s sixth-largest wheat importer. The high dependence on imported wheat has posed a challenge to the country’s food security and foreign exchange reserves.

By reducing the country’s wheat imports, Nigeria hopes to create job opportunities in the agricultural sector, stimulate domestic wheat production, and save valuable foreign exchange. The programme is expected to include initiatives such as the provision of agricultural inputs, mechanisation, and irrigation facilities to farmers.

This move comes as part of the Nigerian government’s Agricultural Promotion Policy (APP), which aims to boost agricultural output and achieve self-sufficiency in key commodities by 2030. According to the APP, the government plans to invest heavily in agricultural infrastructure and provide incentives to farmers to encourage increased production.

The success of this programme will depend on several factors, including the government’s ability to provide adequate funding and support to farmers, as well as addressing challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, climate change, and security concerns in the agricultural sector.

This development is significant for Nigerian consumers, farmers, and the government, as it offers the potential for improved food security, increased job opportunities, and reduced pressure on foreign exchange reserves.
