EES, ETIAS and €20 Fee: Navigating Europe’s New Border Systems to Avoid Visa Scams

As the festive season approaches, many Nigerians are gearing up for travel to Europe. However, a growing number are falling victim to visa scams amid confusion over Europe’s new border control systems. According to Vanguard News, travel agents are charging Nigerian travellers up to N250,000 for both the European Electronic Travel Authorisation (EETA) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which are both new requirements for travel to Europe. Vanguard News reports that yet from Instagram vendors in Surulere to travel plazas in Onitsha, agents are charging these exorbitant fees, fuelled by the uncertainty surrounding the new systems.

The ETIAS, which will replace the current Schengen Visa, is set to be introduced on 1st January 2027. It will be a pre-travel authorisation required for all non-EU citizens travelling to the Schengen Area for short stays. The EETA, on the other hand, is a new electronic travel authorisation system that will be mandatory for all travellers from visa-exempt countries, including Nigeria, who wish to travel to Europe by air.

While the introduction of these new systems aims to streamline travel to Europe and enhance border security, the lack of clear information and the proliferation of unscrupulous agents are creating opportunities for scammers. According to the Nigerian Immigration Service, there has been a surge in reports of visa scams targeting Nigerians planning to travel to Europe.

To avoid falling victim to these scams, Nigerian travellers are advised to apply for their ETIAS and EETA directly through the official websites of the European Commission. The application process is straightforward and can be completed online, with a fee of €20 for each authorisation.

It is also important to be wary of travel agents offering to help with the application process for a fee. Nigerians are encouraged to verify the authenticity of such agents by checking their credentials and ensuring they are registered with the relevant authorities.

The European Union has also issued a warning against visa scams, urging Nigerians to apply for their travel authorisations directly through the official channels to avoid being scammed.

With the right information and a cautious approach, Nigerian travellers can navigate Europe’s new border systems and enjoy a hassle-free trip.
