An audit report released recently has raised concerns over the management of the Cash Transfer Office under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Bola Tinubu. According to Premium Times Nigeria, the report revealed that the office, which made electronic transfers totalling N33.75 billion to 3.2 million households and beneficiaries across 35 states in 2023, failed to provide complete details of the beneficiaries in the payment vouchers. This means that the identities and eligibility of a significant portion of the recipients remain unverified.
This is not the first time such concerns have been raised about the Cash Transfer Office. Previous reports have criticized the lack of transparency and accountability in the distribution of funds, with allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
The failure to verify the identities of beneficiaries not only undermines the credibility of the Cash Transfer Office but also puts the welfare of millions of Nigerians at risk. Without proper verification, funds meant for the most vulnerable may end up in the wrong hands, exacerbating existing inequalities and poverty levels.
It is unclear at this time what steps the government plans to take to address these issues. However, with the 2023 elections fast approaching, the report’s findings are likely to be a major topic of discussion among voters and political parties.
