Increased Deaths, Fewer Attacks in Post-2023 Election Northern Nigeria – Report

In the six months following the 2023 presidential election, a reported decrease in civilian attacks has been observed across seven northern Nigerian states, according to an analysis of 17,114 ACLED conflict records. However, this decrease in attacks has been coupled with an increase in estimated fatalities. The findings were released in a report by Premium Times Nigeria, providing insights into the evolving security situation in the region post-election. The seven states under review are Bauchi, Kaduna, Katsina, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe. It is important to note that the exact causes for this trend remain uncertain, as various factors, such as political unrest, banditry, and farmer-herder clashes, contribute to the conflict records. The report comes at a critical time, as the Nigerian government continues to grapple with security challenges, particularly in the northern region. The data suggests that while the number of recorded attacks on civilians has decreased, the death toll has risen, posing a significant concern for the future of security and stability in these states. According to Premium Times Nigeria, the full report is available on their website.
