Fresh Loan: A Call for Transparency on Previous Borrowings by the FG

Senator Victor Umeh, the lawmaker representing Anambra Central, has raised concerns about the Federal Government’s (FG) latest request for a fresh loan, questioning the whereabouts of funds previously borrowed. In a statement, Senator Umeh expressed his concern over the numerous occasions the National Assembly has approved borrowing funds, with each occasion accompanied by assurances that the funds would be judiciously utilized. However, Umeh asserted that there has been no transparency regarding how the previous loans were utilized, thus his call for accountability and transparency. According to Daily Post Nigeria, the FG is seeking the approval to borrow additional funds, but the specific amount and intended use of the funds have not been disclosed. This is not the first time Umeh has raised questions about the FG’s borrowing practices. In 2022, he criticized the FG’s borrowing habits, stating that the country’s debt profile was alarming and that the borrowed funds were not being utilized effectively. The FG has not yet responded to Umeh’s recent statements. As Nigeria’s debt profile continues to rise, the need for transparency and accountability in the management of public funds becomes increasingly important. With many Nigerians struggling to make ends meet, it is crucial that the government demonstrates responsible stewardship of the country’s resources.
