According to a report by Vanguard News, the NCGC has made significant strides in unlocking credit for Nigerian businesses. As of October 27, 2026, the company has successfully guaranteed loans worth N64.13 billion for 174,495 borrowers across the country. This move is part of the NCGC’s efforts to address the longstanding issue of collateral barriers that have often hindered viable businesses from accessing formal credit. The NCGC, established by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2019, provides credit guarantees to participating financial institutions to enable them to extend credit to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that are otherwise deemed high-risk. By addressing the collateral barrier, the NCGC aims to promote financial inclusion and support the growth of MSMEs in Nigeria. The NCGC’s efforts are especially crucial considering that MSMEs contribute significantly to the country’s economic development but often face challenges in accessing formal credit due to the collateral requirement. The Vanguard News report also noted that the NCGC’s interventions have supported an estimated 914,791 jobs, demonstrating the potential impact of this initiative on the Nigerian economy. It is important to highlight that while the NCGC’s efforts are commendable, the challenge of access to credit for Nigerian businesses remains complex and multifaceted, requiring ongoing efforts from various stakeholders.
