The Neglected Intermediary in Nigeria’s Youth Employment Drive

Nigeria’s youth unemployment crisis is a well-documented challenge, with millions of young Nigerians jobless and searching for opportunities. However, a closer look at the country’s employment initiatives reveals a critical missing link: the intermediary. This gap between education and employment has been a topic of discussion among experts and policymakers, as it hinders the successful integration of youth into the workforce.

According to Premium Times Nigeria, the government’s emphasis on direct job creation has left the intermediary role undeveloped. This is problematic because intermediaries, such as vocational training centres, apprenticeship programs, and job placement services, can play a crucial role in preparing youth for the workforce and connecting them with employers.

Nigeria Business reports that the lack of a robust intermediary system has led to a skills mismatch between job seekers and employers. This mismatch contributes to the high unemployment rate among Nigerian youth, as many graduates find themselves unable to find jobs that match their qualifications.

Experts suggest that addressing this gap requires a combination of public and private sector efforts. On the one hand, the government could invest in vocational training centres and apprenticeship programs to provide young people with the necessary skills. On the other hand, the private sector could partner with these initiatives to offer job opportunities and internships.

The missing middle in Nigeria’s youth employment push is a pressing issue that requires urgent attention. A functional intermediary system can help bridge the skills gap, reduce unemployment, and boost the country’s economic growth. However, to make this a reality, all stakeholders must work together to develop and support such a system.
