In an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’, Umar Ardo, Convener of the Northern League of Democrats, accused other political parties of abandoning grassroots campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, going round the nation’s capital, Abuja, and other states, it is apparent that only the All Progressives Congress (APC) is actively campaigning for the upcoming elections.
Mr. Ardo, who made this assertion on Thursday, expressed concern that the other parties are largely confined to social media platforms, lacking a significant physical presence on the ground. He stressed the importance of grassroots campaigns in connecting with voters and building support for a political party.
The 2027 elections are scheduled to usher in a new administration following the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure. The APC, which has been in power since 2015, is expected to be one of the key contenders in the upcoming elections, with other parties vying for power as well.
It remains unclear why the other political parties are not actively campaigning in the traditionally grassroots manner. Some experts suggest that the increasing influence of social media and digital campaigns may be playing a role in their strategy, with parties focusing more on online outreach and less on physical presence. However, critics argue that such an approach may lead to a disconnect with the electorate, particularly in rural areas where access to the internet is limited.
The allegation of one-sided campaigning is a growing concern among political watchers, who stress the need for fair and balanced political competition in the run-up to the 2027 elections. As the race heats up, it will be important for all parties to prioritize grassroots campaigns, engaging with voters and building support across the country.
