President Tinubu is seeking the confirmation of six executive directors for the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) by the Senate, according to reports from Business Post Nigeria and Voice of Nigeria. The confirmation is necessary to fill the vacant positions within the petroleum regulatory body. This development is significant as it underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to strengthening the oil and gas sector, which is a crucial part of Nigeria’s economy.
According to Business Post Nigeria, the six executive directors are from different zones in the country. The publication did not disclose the names of the nominees. The NMDPRA, established in 2021, regulates the midstream and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria. It took over the functions of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA).
Voice of Nigeria reported that the confirmation hearing for the nominees is expected to take place soon in the Senate. The report did not mention a specific date for the hearing. The NNPC has not said when the facility began operating.
This move to fill the vacant positions at the NMDPRA is part of the Tinubu administration’s efforts to strengthen the oil and gas sector. The sector, which contributes significantly to Nigeria’s GDP and foreign exchange earnings, has faced challenges in recent years, including issues related to pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and regulatory uncertainties.
