AI Cannot Replace Human Compassion in Nursing, NMCN Registrar Warns
The Registrar/CEO of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) warns against relying too heavily on AI in nursing.

In a recent warning, the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr Ndagi Alhassan, expressed concerns about the potential over-reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) in nursing. According to the Tribune Online, Dr Alhassan emphasized that AI should never replace the human compassion that underpins patient care. The NMCN chief executive officer cautioned that excessive reliance on AI could potentially undermine critical thinking and clinical judgment among nurses. This is not the first time such concerns have been raised, as AI’s role in the healthcare sector continues to evolve. In a 2025 report by the World Health Organization (WHO), the organization acknowledged the potential benefits of AI in healthcare but also highlighted the need to ensure that AI complements, rather than replaces, human care. Dr Alhassan’s warning serves as a reminder that, while AI may aid in various aspects of nursing, the human touch remains crucial in providing compassionate care to patients.
