Lagos Ranks Among World’s Most Crime-Prone Cities, According to Report

Lagos has been ranked as one of the world's most crime-prone cities, placing 27th or 28th on various global crime indices. The ranking raises concerns about urban safety and the pressure on law enforcement.

According to reports from multiple Nigerian news outlets, Lagos has been ranked among the world’s most crime-prone cities. Punch Newspapers and Vanguard News both reported that Lagos was placed 27th on the 2026 Numbeo Crime Index with a crime index of 69.1 points. Vanguard News also reported that Lagos was ranked 28th among the world’s 50 most dangerous cities in a separate survey. These rankings raise concerns about urban safety and the growing pressure on law enforcement in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre and one of Africa’s busiest megacities. It is unclear how the two different indices were compiled or what specific crimes were considered in the rankings. However, the high crime rates are a matter of concern for residents and visitors alike. The full reports can be found on Punch Newspapers (Punch) and Vanguard News (Vanguard).
