Federal Government Threatens to Shut Down Lagos Section of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

The Federal Government has issued a two-week ultimatum to motorists and other road users on the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to comply with safety regulations or face closure.

In a move aimed at improving safety along the busy route, the Federal Government has threatened to shut down the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in two weeks if motorists and other road users fail to comply with safety measures and conditions. According to reports by multiple sources, including Punch Newspapers, Vanguard News, Daily Post Nigeria, and Google News, this warning was issued by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare.

The decision comes as a result of persistent safety breaches and vandalism on the highway. The move has sparked concerns among road users and businesses operating along the route, who are now scrambling to comply with the new regulations before the deadline.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a major artery linking the commercial hub of Lagos with Calabar in Cross River State. The route plays a crucial role in connecting the southern and western regions of Nigeria, making its safe operation essential for both economic growth and national security.

The Federal Government’s threat to shut down the highway is not the first time such an action has been considered. In August 2026, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) announced plans to close a section of the highway for repairs, but has not yet specified when the facility began operating.
