Averting Escalating Fuel Costs: An Alternative to Subsidy Restoration

According to The Whistler Newspaper, the World Bank has proposed an alternative strategy for averting the escalating costs of fuel in Nigeria without reinstating subsidies. As reported by Google News on October 6th, 2026, the bank suggests that the government could instead implement policies focused on energy efficiency and reducing consumption to achieve a similar impact.

The Whistler Newspaper further notes that this approach would potentially reduce pressure on the national budget while addressing the root causes of high fuel prices. The World Bank has not yet specified when these measures may be implemented or how they would be carried out.

This strategy comes as many Nigerians grapple with rising petrol prices, exacerbated by the removal of subsidies in recent years. With increasing transportation and production costs, the implications for businesses and households could be significant if a viable alternative is not found.
