The ongoing industrial action by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been accused of being politically motivated by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike. In a statement made on Monday, Wike claimed that the issues raised by the organised labour had already been agreed upon and were being addressed. According to the Daily Post Nigeria, Wike threatened to enforce the ‘no-work-no-pay’ policy if the strike continues.
Meanwhile, other labour unions in the FCT appear divided over the strike. The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has reportedly ordered its members to resume work, while the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has backed the NLC. The division among the labour unions was reported by the Peoples Gazette Nigeria.
The FCT NLC declared the strike on Monday over unpaid salaries and allowances, among other issues. The strike has caused disruptions in public services and commuting in the FCT. According to the Peoples Gazette Nigeria, the FCT administration has been engaging with the labour unions to address their concerns.
