The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is under fire for failing to comply with the Electoral Act by not publishing the voter register 90 days before the scheduled 2027 elections, Premium Times Nigeria reports. According to the Electoral Act, the voter register is supposed to be published seven days before the elections, which would have been on Sunday, 18th October. However, as of the time of this report, the voter register has not been published. This development has sparked concerns among Nigerians, who see it as a potential threat to the credibility of the forthcoming elections. The report further reveals that this is not the first time INEC is facing such allegations. In the past, INEC has been accused of violating the Electoral Act in various ways, including the late release of the timetable and schedule of activities for elections. It is important to note that the elections, scheduled to begin on 16th January 2027, will be critical in determining the political direction of the country. The presidential and National Assembly elections are expected to be keenly contested, and any irregularity could have a significant impact on the outcome. The Nigerian electorate is counting on INEC to conduct free, fair, and credible elections. It is hoped that INEC will take immediate steps to address this issue and ensure that the voter register is published as required by law.
