Guaranty Trust Cooperative Society (GTCO) has entered the digital payment market in Nigeria, launching Google Pay, a service that allows Nigerians to make transactions using their mobile devices. According to Nigeria’s Google News, the launch of Google Pay marks a significant step in the Nigerian fintech sector, offering a new payment option for millions of Nigerians. The move comes as several Nigerian banks and fintech companies expand their digital services to cater to the increasing demand for online transactions. However, it remains unclear if GTCO’s Google Pay service will face any competition from existing digital payment platforms such as Flutterwave, Paystack, and Quickteller. Despite the launch, GTCO has not yet disclosed details about the service’s features, pricing, or when it will be available to the public. This development underscores the growing importance of digital payments in Nigeria, a trend driven by the increasing penetration of smartphones and internet connectivity.
