Abuja Rent: Second Reading Granted for Bill to Protect Tenants from Exploitation
The Nigerian House of Representatives has taken a step towards protecting tenants in Abuja from exploitation, as a bill for its regulation has scaled the second reading.
The Nigerian House of Representatives has taken a significant step in the fight against tenant exploitation in Abuja, as a bill proposing rent regulation was granted a second reading on Thursday, according to multiple sources.
The bill, which aims to protect tenants from unscrupulous landlords, has been met with general support from members of the House.
“This bill is long overdue,” said Hon. Sunday Karimi, a member of the House Committee on Housing.
“Many tenants in Abuja have been subjected to unfair rent increases and poor living conditions for too long. It’s time we put an end to this practice,” he added.
According to The Eagle Online, the bill was initially introduced by Hon. Nkem Abonta, the Chairman of the House Committee on Housing.
If passed, the bill will regulate rent prices in Abuja, prohibit arbitrary evictions, and ensure that rental agreements are fair and transparent.
Premium Times Nigeria reported that the bill was supported by several members of the House, who argued that it was necessary to protect the rights of tenants in the federal capital territory.
“This bill is not only about tenants’ rights, but also about ensuring that landlords adhere to a standard of decency and fairness,” said Hon. Gideon Gwani, a member of the House Committee on Judiciary.
The bill still has to pass through further readings and possible amendments before it becomes law. The exact timeline for this process is unclear at the moment, but the House has expressed its commitment to expediting the process.
This development is significant for Abuja’s housing market, which has long been plagued by reports of tenant exploitation.
For Nigerian tenants in Abuja, this bill could offer much-needed protection and ensure that they are treated fairly by their landlords.
