Frustration and Despair Trails Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary Amid Economic Hardship

On October 1, 2026, Nigeria celebrated its 66th Independence anniversary amid a mix of joy and concern as citizens reflected on the state of the nation since independence. While some expressed optimism about the future, many Nigerians have been left frustrated and despairing due to ongoing economic hardship, insecurity, and other challenges.

In interviews with Daily Post, several individuals shared their feelings about the current situation. One resident of Lagos stated, ‘I’m just tired. Tired of the lack of progress, tired of the corruption, tired of the insecurity.’ Another citizen from Abuja expressed similar sentiments: ‘The cost of living is too high, and there are no jobs to be found. It’s difficult to make ends meet.’

These sentiments were echoed by a young entrepreneur who stated, ‘I started my business with high hopes, but it’s been a struggle to stay afloat. The cost of goods is too high, and there’s little demand for what I offer.’ According to Premium Times, the Nigerian economy has been facing challenges such as inflation, unemployment, and foreign exchange issues that have contributed to the economic hardship felt by many Nigerians.

Despite these challenges, some citizens are calling for collective resilience. A youth group known as ‘Generation Next’ demanded greater inclusion as stakeholders debated Nigeria’s future at Independence Day events, according to Channels Television. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, a prominent political figure, also promised to end rigging and strengthen the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Nigerian government has not commented on the frustrations expressed by citizens during Independence Day celebrations. However, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, described Abuja as a symbol of unity and national growth in a speech marking the occasion, according to Voice of Nigeria.
