According to Punch Newspapers, workers at the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) have threatened a total shutdown over seven months of unpaid salaries and the non-implementation of a new pay structure. The union leader, Comrade Benjamin Ugwueze, stated that the company’s management had failed to address their grievances despite numerous meetings and appeals.
Ugwueze emphasized that the workers were left with no choice but to take this drastic step due to the hardship they have been facing as a result of the unpaid salaries. He further revealed that the management’s continuous disregard for their plight had made it impossible for them to continue working without being compensated.
The PHRC, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has not commented on the situation as of this report. The unpaid salaries could potentially disrupt the operations of the refinery and impact Nigeria’s oil supply chain if the workers follow through with their threat.
The ongoing industrial action at PHRC highlights the challenges faced by Nigerian workers in the public sector, where salary arrears have become commonplace. The situation underscores the need for improved labor relations and timely payment of salaries to maintain productivity and prevent disruptions in essential services.
