According to the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, there is a compelling reason for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek re-election in 2027. Speaking at an event in Abuja on Thursday, Abdullahi argued that Tinubu’s administration needs more time to consolidate its ongoing economic reforms. The reforms, he said, are crucial to laying a solid foundation for the country’s economic growth and development.
Abdullahi’s call comes amidst growing speculation about Tinubu’s intentions for the 2027 elections. While Tinubu has not yet announced his plans, many believe that he is likely to seek a second term in office.
The NITDA boss’s remarks echo sentiments expressed by other high-profile figures in Tinubu’s administration. In recent months, Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed and Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele have both praised Tinubu’s economic policies and expressed support for his re-election.
Some economists have welcomed Abdullahi’s call for Tinubu to stay in office. They argue that the president’s economic reforms, which have focused on privatization, infrastructure development, and fiscal discipline, have helped to stabilize the economy and attract foreign investment. However, others have expressed concerns about the potential for authoritarianism and the erosion of democratic norms under Tinubu’s leadership.
The 2027 elections will be a critical test for Nigeria’s democracy. With Tinubu’s tenure set to expire in 2027, the election will determine the direction of the country for the next four years. Abdullahi’s call for Tinubu to seek re-election underscores the stakes involved in the upcoming contest.
